Local Girl Refuses to be Defeated

The Argus

Is it possible to run without eight toes? And how can anyone run 26.2 miles without these vital digits?

Well, Kim Lo, a partner at local firm PRB Accountants¹, will be doing just that on April 25 when she takes on her most challenging run ever – the Virgin London Marathon.

Kim contracted meningococcal septicaemia (Meningitis) and pneumonia 13 years ago (1997) when she was just 18 – as a result of that she not only lost eight toes, but a lot of skin and padding from her feet and Achilles tendons.

Despite this life-changing misfortune, Kim is no stranger to running – she has run a sub 90 minute half marathon (The Sussex Beacon Half Marathon) and won the Senior Ladies Title in the Sussex Road Racing Grand Prix this year.

“It is this success that has enabled me to secure a Championship place in the marathon. I have also been really inspired by my fellow runners at the Haywards Heath Harriers, particularly my training partner Andrew Biggs who is running the Brighton and London Marathon within one week in aid of the same charity- they have given me the belief to take on this once-in-a-lifetime challenge.”

Kim will be raising money for the Meningitis Trust². “I have run for this charity before – in 1998 I ran a mile of the Pennine Way with my intensive care nurse, having just learned to walk and run again. I am hoping to raise £2,620 – raising money for a charity so close to my heart will make every mile even more worthwhile.

“I want to do the marathon to prove that anyone can run, with or without toes. Nothing should stand in the way of your ambitions. I am a good runner but the marathon will really test my feet,” Kim added.

Kim’s goal is to run the 26.2 miles in under 3hrs 30 min but she will happily settle for under 4 hrs or maybe … “I will just be happy to cross the finishing line”.
