‘Open the Parachute’ and drop in on Emergence’s national fundraising concert in Dorking Halls

Surrey-based theatre company¹ Resurgence and Emergence² have chosen Dorking Halls to hold their first ever national fundraising concert – called ‘Open the Parachute’- to raise much needed funds to continue to educate and fight the stigma associated with personality disorder – a much maligned and misunderstood mental health condition.

Held on October 23 at 3pm, the concert will present an enticing mix of songs, readings, poems and sketches woven together to create a funny, captivating and thought provoking afternoon’s entertainment.

Songs from shows will include: Into the Woods, Cabaret, West Side Story, Passion and fabulous music from singer/songwriter Kayla Kavanagh.

Other works include poems by Stevie Smith, Dylan Thomas, T.S Eliot, John Clare, Wendy Cope, Dorothy Parker, and original sketches and drama.

Emergence is delighted to have attracted a number of well known artists to donate their services including: The Gadget Show presenter Ortis Deley (pictured below) ³ Actors: Lisa Bowerman (Casualty, Dr Who), Susan Franklyn (Soldier Soldier, Casualty), Angus Kennedy (Genie in the House) and singer/songwriter Kayla Kavanagh.

Other performers include: Fiona Byrne, James Lamb, Andy Little, Michael Maddocks, Emma Seigel and Christopher Whitebread.

Kath Lovell, Emergence managing director, said: “I am thrilled with the programme of events we have planned for our first ever dedicated fundraising month.

“October is a perfect time to highlight the issues surrounding personality disorder as October 10 is World Mental Health Day – but at Emergence we need more than one day to draw our campaign to everyone’s attention. We have a number of other exciting events planned4.

“In June this year we also launched our Emergence Pledge and we are asking as many people as possible to support us to ‘Change Attitudes and Build Lives’ for all those affected by personality disorder. Please join us and help make a difference5.”

Susan Franklyn, of Resurgence Theatre Company, said: “We are delighted to be performing at Dorking Halls – it feels like coming home! In 2009 we performed ‘Love Bites’ at The Leatherhead Theatre to hugely appreciative audiences – we hope to repeat that success with ‘Open the Parachute’.

“At Resurgence we have worked on a number of occasions with Emergence. Back in 2009 they approached us with an idea for developing a short piece of theatre relating to personality disorder. We were immediately engaged by the prospect of helping to raise awareness of this much misrepresented and misunderstood condition, especially as one of our core company members has a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD).”
